Biography of C.P.A. Bach
- Felix Meddlesome
The son of a jazz trumpeter and laundress , Carl Philip Agnostic Bach
was born in 1930 in New York City. His mother, hoping that the boy
would not follow in his father’s footsteps and become a musician,
wished him to pursue a career as an accountant, hence the initials C.P.
A.. The boy was baptized at the Lex Lutheran church in the Yorkville
section of Manhattan within a few days of his birth. Considered to be
apostates by most mainline protestants, the Lex Lutherans are unique
in many of their beliefs. Rather than consider the Bible as their source
of guidance, the Lex Lutherans prefer to use comic books as the
locus of their Spiritual discipline . They believe that the Messiah will
appear on earth as a strange visitor from another planet that will
demonstrate superhuman powers which he will use to fight evil.
Throughout his life, C.P.A. will hold down several jobs as organist and
choir director at various Lex Lutheran churches throughout the
United States.
Unable to earn his music degree because his superior intellect and
innate musical talent make it impossible for him to master species
counterpoint, C.P.A finds employment as a jazz pianist at local night
clubs. It isn't long before he accepts offers to perform with singers
and entertainers because of the superior pay. Always an
accompanist, he fails to acquire fame for himself despite years of
touring throughout the world. After several years of endless travel, he
returns to New York where he accepts his first job as Music Director at
the Lex Lutheran church. Finding it difficult to make ends meet in the
city on a church musician’s salary, he accepts a post at the Lex
Lutheran church in New Paltz. He spends several years there, and it’s
in the choir loft of this now abandoned building that most of his
known music was discovered in the 1980’s by the composer and
reform rabbi Moshe “Moe” Zart. Scholars and other bored people are
currently scouring the many Lex Lutheran churches that are scattered
across the continent, hoping to find more of C.P.A.’s lost
masterpieces.
C.P.A.’s history becomes nebulous for several years. It appears that
he was fired from the New Paltz church because of his wild
improvisations during offertories. It’s believed that he roamed about
the country for several years, working as an itinerant organist at
several churches.
We next find C.P.A. in Miami, Florida, where he makes brief night club
appearances between engagements as lounge pianist on cruise
ships. He was last seen disembarking in New Orleans. His fate is
unknown, though rumors of his appearances at after hours clubs,
“cutting” the world’s most prominent jazz pianists still surface till this
day. Among his discovered works are The Two Part Military
Interventions, The Napoleon and Other French Sweets , The Italian -
American Concerto or Fughetto Bout It, and his magnum opus The B
Minor Mess.
